What is Vertigo?

Vertigo is caused when a crystal in your inner ear dislodges and moves into circular canals where it alters the flow of fluid. This makes the room seem to spin around you.

What is Vestibular Therapy?

Vestibular means “of or relating to the vestibule” (the inner ear) which includes parts of the inner ear and brain. The vestibular system, the “king of all your senses,” is critical for our sense of balance, movement, and spatial orientation.

If we do not train or strengthen our muscles, we will lose them. The vestibular system works the same way. We must train the system with specific exercises so it will continue to provide information about our position in space.

Why is it important to stimulate my vestibular system?
What is true for aspects of physical function, the term “use it or lose it” applies to our balance as well. As we age and become more sedentary, the vestibular system begins to deteriorate.

As it declines, fear of falling promotes further lack of movement—further weakening the vestibular system.

This can be delayed through specific exercises that train the vestibular system.

What is vertigo?

How do I maintain a healthy vestibular system?
Beyond keeping a regular exercise routine, engaging in vestibular and somatosensory activities designed to challenge the vestibular system will be most effective.

This includes:

  • vision stability
  • postural training
  • balance training
  • stretching exercises
  • strengthening exercises

For people with balance, equilibrium, or dizziness problems, this is best initiated under the guidance of a specialist.

Do I need to see a specific therapist?
For specific gait or balance training, any of our therapists can treat. If the issue is more vertigo or vestibular related, we recommend seeing Dr. Matthew Gordon.
How many sessions will I need?
We will typically see patients once a week or once every other week for 5-7 sessions or even less. Patients often start feeling noticeably better after their first session.
