The Right Way to Lose Weight

Who doesn’t want to lose a little—or a lot—of weight?

The International Food Information Council Foundation found that 77% of Americans want to lose weight. But what is the “right” way? It's a question many people are asking. Usually, more than once, since research shows up to two-thirds of those who diet regain all the weight they had lost, plus some.

With so much hype about this diet or that, people forget the most successful weight loss strategies have a much bigger picture in mind. While there is no one-size-fits-all solution, there are some basic principles which will always ring true.

The best plans to lose weight will include these key factors:

  1. Comprehensive – By focusing solely on losing weight, people forget that the real goal is living a healthy lifestyle. By adopting a broader goal of becoming a healthier (and happier) person, by changing the way you eat and move, shedding pounds will be a byproduct.
  2. Sustainability – The best diet is the one you can keep. How sustainable is your weight loss plan? Sustainability is key to maintaining results over the long haul. Each person has their own level of dedication and resilience, but if a plan requires too much effort, it won't last long.
  3. Satisfaction – Believe it or not, you can actually enjoy eating healthy and exercising, but you have to find out what’s right for you! Satisfaction eliminates the need for immense willpower. Your workout plan is no exception. Finding an activity you love makes it far more likely that you'll stick to it.
  4. Accountability – You are a product of the people you surround yourself with. A strong support system that is positive and uplifting will help you succeed.

Take an honest look at your healthy living strategy. Can you maintain your current course of action for years into the future? Is it working for you?
