The Mettler Release
Celebrating Men at Mettler

In June we are focusing on men's health and wellness.

This issue begins with an interview of several dedicated male members and how they have grown to embrace a healthy lifestyle! They share what they have learned along the way and what motivates them to push themselves to the next level.

We also focus on flexibility for men. Many men feel hopeless in achieving a fuller range of motion. We share suggestions for improving flexibility no matter your age or flexibility level.

To show appreciation of our members, we've included a complimentary coupon for $5 off a massage in our newsletter. We hope this encourages the hard working men among us to take a well-deserved break!

And don't forget to take a look at the upcoming events; there are many new and exciting programs starting in June!

What keeps you motivated to stay active?
I have been coaching cross country, volleyball, and track for about 20 years. Coaching and teaching keep me motivated!

Who was an inspirational male mentor in your life?
Easy. Dominic, a member at Mettler Center. He is now 90 years old. Works out 2-3 times a week. Active mind and body. "Use or lose it." I hope 35 year from now I will be that active and alert.

Best advice for those striving to live a healthy lifestyle?
Balance. Think about what that word means. The applications are limitless.

Topper Steinman, Mettler Center Member

How did you initially get involved in a healthy lifestyle?
I played varied sports through college so I have been active most of my life.  I fell off the "active wagon" for a while after college.  Married with children in my early 30's convinced me to model healthy living once again.

What keeps you motivated to stay active?

1.) I like the way I feel after a workout 2.) We only get one body. I believe in the "use it or lose it" mantra 3.) My wife, Carol, also works out and it's a great coupling connection - and Mettler is an awesome place with wonderful people to keep the "active" alive!

Best advice for those striving to live a healthy lifestyle?

Start small. Find something you like to do to stay active. Stick with it (this is the hard part). Finally, if you struggle staying active and healthy for yourself, do it for those you love and those who love you.

Michael Hetherington, Mettler Center Member

How did you initially get involved in a healthy lifestyle?
After serving in the army as a captain of field artillery and serving a year in Iraq as a platoon leader, I was burnt out and just let myself go and very easily put on an extra 50 lbs. Since deciding to work out again, I'm back down to 232lbs with more to go.

What keeps you motivated to stay active?

In December of 2011 I was at my all-time heaviest weight. Today, results like adding 60 lbs to my bench press, doing pull ups, and dropping my 5k run time from 39:30 to 27:30 keeps me motivated.

What role has the Tot Spot played in your fitness goals?

I am a stay at home dad. If the tot spot weren't available or wasn't such a fun place that my children actually LOVE going to, I'm not sure I would have lost the weight.

Best advice for those striving to live a healthy lifestyle? YOU can do it. Mettler's positive, supportive atmosphere is a great place to get started and follow through. All it takes is driving to the gym to feel better!

Flexibility Issues? You Are Not Alone

You can run a marathon, but you cannot touch your toes. You're not the only one. Many individuals push their muscles to the limit, but do not balance this with stretching.

Flexibility training is an often forgotten component of fitness. Due to hormones and genetic make-up, men are naturally less flexible than woman; however, flexibility is still important to overall fitness.

Benefits of Flexibility

  • Injury prevention
  • Improved athletic performance
  • Greater range-of-motion
  • Increased circulation
  • Alignment of joints and better posture

General Guidelines for Improving Flexibility

  • Consistency - This is the most important factor; make daily stretching a habit.
  • Stretch while warm - Muscles behave a lot like Silly Putty, pliable when warm; stretch after a workout or shower.
  • Hold stretches - for a minimum of 30 seconds.
  • Pain means no gain - Gently stretch and only push to the point of slight discomfort.
  • No bouncing - It's less effective and can cause injury. Stretch slowly and smoothly and sustain a hold within the stretch.
  • Breathe - Maintain normal breathing throughout each stretch.

Ready to stretch? Try one of our yoga classes (e.g. Gentle, Restorative, Hatha, Sunset) or Stretching & Body Alignment. View our schedule and find a class that works for you.

Health Tip
of the Month
Hydrate before a massage too! Most therapists will remind you to flush toxins after massage, but it's equally important to hydrate beforehand. During massage lactic acid is pushed out of muscle and into your bloodstream. Without water, your blood flow is sluggish, stagnate, and may not process these toxins as readily. More massage
