4 Ways to Love Healthy Foods

Each March, the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics encourages Americans to return to the basics of healthful eating through National Nutrition Month. This year's theme, "Bite Into a Healthy Lifestyle," reminds us that one of the essential components of healthy eating is to enjoy eating healthy foods.

There is no group of people I know who love food more than dietitians. I believe this quality helps make us healthy eaters. While we like to eat high-calorie or nutrient-poor foods on occasion, we also genuinely love healthy foods. We love the way they taste; we love the way they nourish us. We can choose foods based on their nutritional value, enjoy the taste of them, and not feel deprived by declining the less healthy option. Follow the lead of healthy eaters, and learn to love the taste of healthy foods, starting with these tips:

  1. Be an adventurous eater. Try new (healthy) foods at every opportunity. Or, if you have a limited diet now, make it a goal to experiment with a new fruit or vegetable each week. Don't give up on a food if you don't like it the first time. Prepare it a new way, and try it again!

  2. Slow down when eating. Chew your food thoroughly, and put your fork down between bites to allow yourself to savor the taste of food longer.

  3. Tune-in to your senses. Pay attention to the appearance, flavor, aroma, and "mouthfeel" of your food, and allow yourself to appreciate how foods affect all of your senses.

  4. Learn delicious ways to cook healthy foods. Gradually cut down on fat, sugar, and salt in your usual recipes, and watch how your taste buds adapt to appreciate the natural taste of foods. Use citrus juices, herbs, spices, oils, and vinegars to add amazing new zest to your food while you reduce your reliance on fat, sugar, and salt.
