history

A timeline of Mettler.

Humble Beginnings

Paul Mettler decided to realize his dream of opening his own private physical therapy practice and established Mettler Physical Therapy Clinic, a 1,000 ft² office in Huntington Towers in Champaign, IL.

Important Discovery

Paul Mettler discovered a way to restructure adhesive scar tissue that connects the deeper layers to muscle fascia—without causing further injury. The innovative treatment method was termed MRT® (Mettler Release Technique) and has since been trademarked as Dermo-Myofascial Release®.

Rapid Growth

Having outgrown it's original office, the practice moved to a 1,500 ft² space in the Trade Center building. Several pieces of fitness equipment were purchased to help serve the needs of Wolfram Research employees. An athletic trainer was hired to develop the fitness side of the practice.

Fitness Component Added

The practice moved again to a 4,000 ft² space in State Street Plaza and was renamed to Mettler Physical Therapy and Health Fitness Center. Limited fitness memberships were added and a physical therapist and physical therapist assistant were hired to assist in therapy.

A New Era of Wellness

The renamed Mettler Center opened its doors at the Crossing. Built from the ground up, the new facility's design included a full fitness gym, group exercise rooms, lockers, a teaching kitchen, physical therapy and massage treatment rooms, offices and a lounge. More physical therapists were hired and fitness memberships began to grow.

A Campus Presence

Mettler Physical Therapy and Fitness Center at the Plaza on Green Street opened to serve University of Illinois students.

Small Business Accolades

Mettler Center won the Small Business of the Year Award from the Champaign County Chamber of Commerce and was named Best Private Practice in the nation by Advance Magazine.

A Focus on the Athlete

Mettler Athletic, a 14,000 ft² facility at Illini Plaza offered cutting edge fitness, sports performance, skill instruction, personal training and physical therapy. With the sports enthusiast in mind, Mettler Athletic became a training ground for athletes wanting to “move to the next level.”

Fascia Research Award

Mettler Center received the second place award for clinical usefulness at the The Fourth International Fascia Research Congress (FRC) for its presentation entitled “Use of High Frequency Shear Wave Elastography (HFSWE) to Identify and Evaluate Treatment of Fascial Adhesions”

Healthy Active Aging

Mettler Center at the Crossing employs a team of physical therapists as well as over 75 other staff, including massage therapists, personal trainers, registered dietitians, group fitness instructors, and many other support staff.

Over 1,000 patients per month are treated by Mettler Physical Therapy and we maintain a membership of 1,900 along with many other guest and member visits to massage, personal training, group classes and other services.
