1. What is CranioSacral Therapy?

CranioSacral therapy is a gentle manual therapy that uses light touch. By using light touch it helps inhibit the Sympathetic Nervous System and activate the Parasympathetic Nervous System (PNS). The PNS is the body’s rest and restore state. Most people are unable to reach that state on their own. Activating the PNS allows the practitioner to feel the craniosacral rhythm and use it as a guide to restricted areas in the body.

What are restrictions and releases?
Restrictions in the body can be any number of things such as: adhesions, scar tissue, knots, impingements, chronic pain, trauma, emotional energy cysts to name a few. Restrictions can be released in a variety of different ways. For instance, a release can be softening or lengthening of the muscle. It can also present itself as a muscle twitch, body adjustment, deep breaths, eye flutters, or stomach growls.

Who can benefit?
Everyone! Anyone from an infant to elderly can benefit from this technique.

In this blog I will specifically be talking about Pelvic Floor health.

2. How can CranioSacral Therapy help my Pelvic Floor health?

What is the Pelvic Floor?
The Pelvic floor helps to stabilize the core, hold back urine, and supports the organs in the pelvic region. The muscles of the pelvic floor are both voluntary and involuntary. Pelvic floor dysfunction is the inability to control the muscles of the pelvic region.

How CranioSacral Therapy works with the Pelvic Floor
By using the pelvic diaphragm release, a technique used to help heighten the client’s body awareness in the pelvic floor, I stimulate your subconscious to release restrictions in the body. Restriction releases occur where the body deems necessary, and allows your body to decide what it is ready to let go of. Your body continues to work through restrictions as we go through a full-body session. Releases may be instant or manifest later in the body, and they're different for everyone.

Benefits
Some of the pelvic floor dysfunctions that may benefit from this treatment are:

  • Bladder Urgency/frequency and IC
  • IBS
  • Pelvic pain
  • Emotional Difficulties/Depression- anxiety, holding on to past events/memories, low libido
  • Infertility
  • Pain during pregnancy
  • PCOS
  • Irregular Menstrual cycles/cramping

"Releases, from crying to muscle twitches, are a way to let go and heal."

3. After a Session

I have personally seen/felt releases while treating a client. A complete pelvic shift has happened, temperature change, muscle twitch, softening of the tissue and crying, to name a few. All of which are normal. A way to let go and heal.

What you can expect after a session

  • No/less cramping
  • Better urinary control
  • Less tension/pain
  • Better body awareness
  • Emotional Releases

Continued sessions and orthopedic work with a Physical Therapist for optimal benefits is suggested. Having a counselor available is also another form of therapy to use in conjunction with CranioSacral work.
