5 Tips for Staying Active in Colder Weather

It's November and the temperatures are dropping. Some days it still feels like autumn, and others it's more and more like winter out there. But don’t let the weather slow you down from maintaining a consistent exercise routine.

Below are five tips to make the most of this cooler season.

  1. Be weather conscious
    It’s never fun to be caught off guard; so make sure to check the forecast before heading outside. Temperature, wind, and moisture along with the length of time you’ll be outside are all important factors.
     
  2. Warm up inside before going outside
    It seems like common sense, but often we get so laser focused about getting into our workout we forgo warming up in the most optimal way. Just 5 or 10 minutes of building internal body heat inside, will do your muscles and joints a world of good!
     
  3. Smart style
    Dress for warmth and visibility. At the coldest temperatures consider a base layer (i.e. wicking material), insulating (i.e. fleece), and a protective water-proof layer on top. Now is a perfect time to sport your favorite gloves and hat. Reflective and light gear are also good to consider since hours of daylight are limited. If you really want to treat yourself, consider hand/foot warmers that can provide warmth for hours on end!
     
  4. Embrace winter with better traction
    Don’t let the fear of slipping on snow or ice be an excuse to forgo being active outside. By adding a product like YakTrax or NANOspikes onto your shoes you can be sure-footed whether you are walking the dog or going on a morning run. Maybe include these on your wish list this year.
     
  5. Mix it up
    Sign up for a fun run/walk or invite a buddy to keep you accountable during the fall and winter season. No-Guilt Hot Chocolate

  • 1 ½ Tbsp. Unsweetened Cocoa powder

  • ½ cup. Fat-free milk

In a microwave-safe mug combine all ingredients with ½ cup of water. Heat, stir and enjoy!
