We are all in agreement that spring cannot arrive soon enough. In the meantime, we have many exciting programs to help keep you busy until it warms up outside. March is National Nutrition Month® and below we share more tips on eating mindfully, along with a fabulous recipe to try.

 

In addition, this month we are starting up several new programs such as a new Muay Thai Kickboxing class and Golf Flexibility & Balance workshop. We're also beginning a one-day-a-month promotion series to highlight our massage therapists. This month's featured therapist is Jason Anderson.

Sure, but what does it mean?

 

Research suggests that taste tops nutrition when it comes to choosing food. This preference makes complete sense. We may seek out the newest superfood or practically have a degree in label-reading, but when it comes to the foods we regularly eat, we often stick with what we like. That means a lifetime of burgers and ice cream, right?

 

Not so fast! Eating healthy and enjoying your food don't need to be mutually exclusive. The trick is to combine taste and nutrition into an eating plan that helps you look and feel good. It's not as hard as you might think. Try these tips on for size:

  1. Enjoy breakfast. Healthy behaviors are often easier to implement in the morning before the rest of your day intrudes. Why not try that new oatmeal recipe you've been eyeing or throw together a tasty fruit salad? Make it your mission to find one new fruit in the grocery store this week. You might find your new favorite--and healthy--meal!   

  2. Try a new recipe. The easiest way to find a recipe is to choose a favorite ingredient and type it into your favorite search engine. (Try myrecipes.com.) Or, jump-start your taste buds with the healthy recipe below.    

  3. Make half your plate fruits and vegetables. Fruit and veggies add color, flavor and texture, along with plenty of the vitamins, minerals and fiber your body is craving. By filling your plate with produce, you'll automatically control your portions while getting the nutrients you need, all while enjoying delicious flavors.

Steamed Brussel Sprouts with Orange Reduction
Brussels Sprouts with Orange Reduction 

Lightly steaming Brussels sprouts boosts their nutritional value while preventing unpleasant odors. Fill up on vitamin C and vitamin K with this delicious side dish!

 

Prep Time: 15 minutes

Cook Time: 10 minutes

 

Ingredients:

  • 1 lb. Brussels sprouts, trimmed and thinly sliced
  • 1/2 cup orange juice
  • 1 1/2 tablespoons canola oil
  • 1 large red onion, peeled, quartered and thinly sliced
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons orange zest
  • Salt and pepper

Directions:

Steam Brussels sprouts until they are tender but still bright green, about 3 to 4 minutes; don't overcook. While sprouts steam, simmer orange juice in a small saucepan over medium-low heat until reduced to 2 tablespoons. Remove from heat and set aside. Heat oil in medium sauté pan over medium heat and cook onions until tender, about 2 to 3 minutes. Toss with Brussels sprouts, orange reduction and orange zest. Add salt and pepper to taste. Serve warm or at room temperature.

Anxious to return to the links? Get back into the swing by learning to incorporate aspects of balance to control core stability through the golf swing. This free workshop will also educate the importance of a stretch routine before your opening tee time.

ESPN Radio

If you're a faithful listener to the 93.5 ESPN show "The Tay & J Show," you may hear Lon Tay and Jeremy Werner reminisce about services at Mettler. Both personalities are exploring all that Mettler has to over the next two months.
