The Mettler Release
Meet Your Fitness Goals at Mettler!
Greetings!

Each year Americans use New Year's Eve as a time for looking back to the past and looking forward to the year ahead. It's a time to reflect on the changes we want (or need) to make and resolve to follow through on those changes.

Although many will resolve to spend more time with their family and friends or quit smoking, others choose to introduce fitness to their lifestyle, lose weight, eat better, or learn something new.

The Mettler Center staff is ready to help you reach all of your health and fitness goals - whether your goal is to stress less, learn something new, or lose weight and eat more healthily.

We hope that your new year is already off to a great start, and we're excited to help you make this year the best yet.

Set Goals to Make This Year Your Best
Set Goals to Make This Year Your Best
Goal setting is used by top athletes, business people, and achievers in all fields. It helps you focus and organize your time and resources so that you can make the very most of your life.

By setting clear goals, you can measure your accomplishments, celebrate your success, or mark how far you've come.

This year as you set your New Year's goals, be sure to set specific goals. Instead of making a goal to "eat better," decide to eat the right amount of fruits and vegetables every day.

These specific goals should be measurable so that you can tell whether or not you've achieved them.

There should also be markers of your success between your starting point and your goal. This way, if you don't accomplish your goal, you'll be able to tell if you're en route to achieving your goals.

Each goal should also be attainable. Although you may not be able to reach your goal right away, you should be able to take the first step to achieving your goal immediately. As you progress, you'll reach other mini-goals that you've set along the way of achieving your big goal.

Goals should also be rewarding. Many people have a hard time losing weight when their goal is based on looking better. If they're losing weight to improve their cholesterol or live longer, it's more likely that they'll stick to their goal. Why are you working toward your particular goal?

Finally, goals should be trackable. Instead of saying that you'd like to run a 5k, setting a goal of running a 5k by the end of the summer or running a specific 5k will help you reach your goal. Otherwise, you may be sitting around in December 2012 wondering where the year went and if you still have time to run a 5k.

Do you need help setting goals for yourself? We have registered dietitians and personal trainers available to help you set and reach your health and fitness goals.

Relieve Stress with Massage Therapy
If you've made it your goal to stress less in the coming year, try spending some time with our massage therapists.

In addition to relieving stress, massage therapy is also an effective way of alleviating the pain that comes from chronic stress or chronic-stress related complications like tired eyes and headaches.

Tired eyes, which can come staring at the computer, can be relieved by closing your eyes and placing your thumbs under your eyebrows, starting at the inside corner of each eye socket. If you press and gently move the thumbs in tiny circles, working slowly towards the outsides of your eyebrows and continuing this movement all around your eyes, ending back at the bridge of your nose, you should feel some relief.

Massage can also relieve headaches and tension if you put your thumbs on your cheekbones close to your ears, and use your fingertips to gently apply pressure and rub the temples.

Tense hands can be relieved by rubbing each finger from the base to the tip and gently pulling and twisting each finger as you go. Squeezing the fleshy part of your palm between your opposite thumb and index finger, moving from your wrist to the base of your thumb should provide relief, too.

Once you've worked out your hand, squeezing the web between your index fingers and thumbs several times should also guarantee relief.

Try Suspension Training at Mettler
This month, we will offer suspension training. Using no resistance other than body weight, members will get a full-body workout using suspension straps in this small group personal training class.

A certified strength coach and personal trainer will lead you through this 30-minute training that features progressive strength and plyometric movements. This allows each class member to work at his or her own pace while building strength, speed, and agility.

For more information, please contact member services.

It's time for our New Year's promotion and we have many  opportunities for non-members to learn about our services.

On January 10th at 4:30pm, several group exercise instructors will lead potential members through 30-minute demonstrations.
