What is Postural Restoration?

According to the Postural Restoration Institute, the PRI treatment approach is based on the fact that the human body is asymmetrical. For example, we have the liver on the right and the heart on the left, thus making our diaphragm, our primary breathing muscle, unequal. Posture is a reflection of the body’s ability to adapt/ compensate for these asymmetries. The goal of postural restoration is to improve bodily functions and perform at a higher level at any age.

Ailments and symptoms treated by Postural Restoration:

  • Head and neck tension
  • Shoulder, knee, hip and back pain
  • Migraines and headaches
  • Difficulty breathing and other respiratory issues
  • Scoliosis
  • Poor athletic performance
  • TMJ

5 benefits of Postural Restoration:

  1. Helps lower joint pain:
When we use one side of our body more than the other, it can lead to joints wearing out sooner. Activating specific muscles can help to decrease stress placed on susceptible joints.

  2. Improves breathing, performance, and endurance:
Asymmetries of the diaphragm affect position and posture of the human body. By correcting the diaphragm's position and mobility of the rib cage, breathing is improved. When breathing is improved, the body's ability to deliver oxygen to its tissues is also improved.

  3. Decreases low back pain:
Decreases stress on lumbar spine by activating underused muscles for improved posture and stability

  4. Helps reduce neck pain and headaches:
Aims to realign the spine and neck to reduce pressure that causes pain

  5. Helps manage scoliosis symptoms and progression
