Get to Know: Jane Mader

Check out this extended interview with licensed massage therapist Jane Mader!

Backstory: where it all began

Q: Why did you become a massage therapist?
A: After dropping out of college my junior year, I did some soul searching. My major had been Psychology because I wanted to bring peace to those who were locked in their minds. After struggling with depression myself, I found a world of natural and spiritual healing through crystal healing, energy work, and most importantly, massage! I found a school that was near my hometown and enrolled. Little did i know that I had found my calling!

Q: What is your best health/fitness advice?
A: Drink water! Right now! Go get a glass and take a sip! Stretch, listen to your body, and be grateful.

Q: What is your favorite type of massage to give and to receive?
A: I don't have a favorite style as all of my massages are entirely tailored to the person's needs and body. I like to incorporate myofascial techniques with PNF techniques, along with feeling out each muscle. I always add a little light to my client's energetic body, ground them, and work with light to help release muscles as well. I really like to receive clinical work, but I enjoy any style as we each have our unique flow!

Current: the here and now

Q: What are you doing when you are not at Mettler?
A: If I'm at home, I'm either making macrame pendants or spinning poi. If I'm out, I'm typically at a forest preserve hiking trail or driving around, learning the area. I also enjoy live music, so I'm usually on the hunt for local bands and constantly checking the Canopy Club's schedule!

Q: What is your favorite way to de-stress or treat yourself?
A: By getting a massage! Otherwise a nice bath and ice cream usually do the trick.

Q: People may not know that you are passionate about...
A: Meat consumption. I'm a vegetarian, and though I don't think everyone should stop eating meat, I wish we would decrease the amount we consume and look into the companies we buy from. I just wish more people thought about the food they are eating and the impact it has, from internally to globally.

Q: What is one thing you can't live without?
A: Music!

Q: What is your guilty pleasure?
A: Honestly, turning up my music and dancing around the house all by myself. Best way to zap myself right into a good mood. Try it, you'll see.

Q: What is your spirit animal?
A: A tiger!

Q: Pizza or tacos?
A: Mmm..I'd have to say tacos.

Future: the best is yet to come

Q: What's something you've always wanted to try?
A: To travel alone and do a work/homestay program!

Q: What are some of your wellness or fitness goals?
A: I'd really like to learn yoga

Q: Where would you like to take your next vacation?
A: Oh gosh, I can't pick one place! Oregon, Colorado, I'd like to see the Badlands and the Appalachian Mountains. I'd like to go to Hawaii, pretty much anywhere and everywhere to be honest with you!
